Last night I went to a Jazz club. Not my usual kind of gig but I’ve never been one to shy away from a new experience, so I thought I’d give it a try.
I was also secretly hoping for some light easy Bossa Nova-esque sounds, but was instead confronted with an experimental complex jazz meets heavy metal.
I enjoyed it way more than I thought I would, and as I listened I realised why…
It’s because something interesting was happening at the meeting place, essentially the boundaries, of two different things.
It reminded me of an interesting phenomenon I’ve observed in the last few years of my life; the unusual thing that arises when you bring two different things together. Brené Brown says you should trust those that :
1. Have boundaries and respect yours
2. Are reliable
3. Are accountable (largely for their mistakes ) and allow you to apologize for yours
4. Keep your secrets (and the secrets of others )
5. Have integrity
6. Ask for help and give help when asked
7. Assume the best of you when you make mistakes

Should you teach yoga if it’s not your purpose to do so?

There is a lot of talk about passion and purpose in our world, and that is largely a great thing!
There is also a lot of people doing yoga in the world – even more great!
It also explains why yoga teacher trainings are so popular and why so many people look to yoga as a career move, a side hustle, a hobby or simply as a way to ‘give back’. Knowing what your deep passion is is more difficult than it seems it should be. Combining your passion with your purpose; even more tricky.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of having coffee with a fellow entrepreneur... I guess it’s a bit like mums who like to meet up with other mums ... the non-mums just don’t get it ... and that’s why I like to meet up with as many independent working people as I can to share ideas , get some cheerleading , some reality checks and inspiration.
I asked particular person how they handle work life balance ... Because it’s different when you’re not employed (obviously) ...
Two things came out of this conversation :
1. Don’t feel guilty about working a lot - I love what I do and a lot of it is fun and exciting and challenging !
2. Don’t feel guilty about time off ! And time off May not look like the traditional 6-10pm weekdays and weekends...
And that’s ok.
You can’t hold yourself to the schedule and rhythm of full time employed people ...
I also realised however that I do need to structure in real time off ... maybe not everyday from 6-10pm but I need to look create my own off time rhythm.
And (yes, I will still be working ) but taking a group of people to this hotel @eremitohotel where there is no WiFi is like a real break for me!
Meditation. Yoga. Winery visits. Vegetarian meals. Long stretches of doing nothing, lazing about in the spa. And engaging in non-distracted, non- time- restrained conversations.
Yes please !
I believe Eremito will become a regular hideaway for me. Can’t wait to go back.

Do you know that our entire system - (body and mind )needs 25 minutes to process just 1 phone call ?! To kind of recover in a sense , to find our equilibrium. Think about how many calls, emails, texts, meetings, experiences we’re losing the real meaning and deeper experience of, because we’re just running from one thing to the next?

I have a few hacks for this - simply to just stay sane and happy and to touch that deeper sense in ourselves that feeds us with meaning , which we all crave but rarely know how to find.
1. Work in 45 mins Bursts (uninterrupted ) and then get up and do nothing ... for at least 5 minutes .
2. Give yourself 15 minutes in the morning before the phone goes on - at the very least take quiet time in the shower
3. Don’t immediately turn to a text or talk with someone else after you’ve had a long and brilliant conversation with a friend
It’s all about giving our systems time to digest the madness, the beauty, the intensity , all of it .

We’ve all been there right ? You meet someone and you suddenly feel all the feels the love song is about .
That’s the easy part !

And for my entire life I’ve been all about the feels - it has led me to interesting places but I question whether it led me to real love -‘it certainly didn’t lead me to lasting love !
I came across one of my favorite humans @yogaruparodstryker talk about relationships and he asked a question that really struck me ... in terms of choosing a partner , the most important question you want answered is not ‘how does this person make me feel? ‘ but rather how does this person show up when I am estranged from those good feelings?

Truth.
Let’s all get better at showing up

The path of action vs the path of surrender - one of the greatest and most difficult ‘yogic’ concepts to truly live.

Let me say it again in my own words:
Finding the balance between obsessive productivity and totally passivity (or how I like to say ‘mehness’.) It’s said that the universe takes 10 steps towards you when you take one step towards it... but what is not often said is that if you take one (or 100) steps too many , then the universe backs off and seems to get all pissy because you thought you were in control of everything for a minute.

And so you learn to dance the dance of action and surrender ... an eternal kind of cosmic tango. It’s nearly impossible to be in the perfect tension between the two but on my good days., I can almost enjoy it ... like a never ending love affair that never evolves into a stable and known relationship. Kind of painful , kind of Beautiful.

So here are some practical tips to know when your productivity is becoming a problem :

1. Being acutely aware of ‘wasting time’
2. Overly reliant on technology to optimize time management
3. no 1 conversation topic ‘crazy busy ‘
4. Your phone is an extension of your arm
I’m guilty of all of these but every now and then I get a solid reminder from the universe to let go ...
